Bluish-black lustrous pearls ·Solubility in water at 20 °C 0,3 g/l ·D: 4,93 ·M. P.: 113,6 °C ·B. P.: 185,24 °C ·
APPLICATIONS: Analytical reagent · Preparation of iodimetric solutions · Antiseptic , germicide ·
Synthesis reagent: Unlike bromination or chlorination , iodination of aromatic rings is reversible and it is frecuently necessary to use an oxidising agent to oxidise the iodide ion liberated , thereby driving the reaction to completion · Used like oxidants: Nitric Acid , Mercury (II) oxide , Fuming sulphuric acid , Alkenes react with iodine in the presence of water to give transiodohydrins . In the presence of acetate or azide ion, the adducts are the trans-b-iodoacetates or b -iodoazides · Alkenes react with iodine in methanol in the presence of Copper (II) acetate to give -b -iodoethers · Synthesis of alkyl iodides by reaction of primary alcohols with iodine and red phosphorus · The combination of iodine with mercury (II) chloride effects the direct a -iodination of aldehydes and ketones . Reaction is more effective than with copper (II) acetate , unsymmetrical ketones giving preferential iodination at the more substitued site · a-Iodination of carboxylic acids · a-Iodination of acid chlorides · The stereochemistry of the iodolactonisation of unsaturated acids can be kinetically or thermodynamically controlled · Preparation of cyanogen iodide |
