White crystalline powder · Solubility in water at 20 ° C 3 g/l , at 28 ° C 128 g/l · M. P.: 250-256 ° C · Thermal decom. above 250 ° C ·
APPLICATIONS: Analytical reagent: · Additive for ion-pair chromatography ·Potentiometric titration of perchlorate using selective electrodes ·
Synthesis reagent: Phenols react with alkyl halides in 50 % aqueous sodium hydroxide containing 1 equivalent of CTAB at 80 °C to form phenolic ethers in 85-97 % yield ·CTAB forms water-insoluble salts with acidic polysaccharides which are useful for isolation and purification of such substances ·Nitriles can be obtained in 75-93 % yield by heating to 100 °C a suspension of an alkyl halide , sodium cyanide (2 equiv.) and CTAB (1,5 mol. %) in water (26 mol. %) during 12 hours |
